When it comes to child custody, there is no question that both parents may feel strongly about what they want. However, to come to an agreement and avoid the courtroom, there are a few tips that can help.

After all, taking time to consider what’s best for your children will usually overcome any disagreements or hostility that you and your ex have for one another. Here are three tips:

1. Focus on the children and their interests

Child custody agreements aren’t about how you or your ex feel about the divorce or past. Be sure to stay focused on your children rather than on any issues you may have with their other parent. Talk to your ex about what your child needs, what they are used to and what will help them achieve a feeling of stability and security moving forward. This will help you come up with an agreement that you can both live with and that will benefit your child.

2. Establish realistic commitments and goals

When you set commitments and goals, make sure you are realistic about what you can and cannot do. Don’t allow your insecurity or fear to get in the way of what’s best for your child. If you and your ex can’t agree on something, compromise. Giving a little now may convince them to give in on another issue you have regarding child custody agreements.

3. Keeping child custody out of the courtroom

It is possible to develop a child custody agreement that works for you and your ex without going to court. While it may seem challenging, if you focus on what is best for your child, you can come to an agreement that works for you both. Also, by avoiding court, you can save time and money.
