Virtual visits to help long-distance parent-child relationships

Trying to find ways to connect with your children when you don’t live in the same area can be difficult. One of the options that’s possible for long-distance situations is virtual visits.

Virtual visits can use a variety of methods that allow you to connect with your children. The exact methods you use depend on what’s best for you and your children. Text messages, video chats, phone calls and emails are some of the possibilities.

Set a flexible plan

One thing you’ll quickly realize about virtual visits is that staying flexible is the key. There should be a set schedule for when these visits will occur, but you should be willing to adjust to the type of visit that will occur. Remember, it’s also possible to remain in contact even between these visits.

When you’re planning the virtual visits, think about things your child will enjoy. Some options to consider include reading books together, helping your children with homework or watching movies.

Virtual visits don’t replace in-person visits

You shouldn’t ever assume that virtual visits are suitable replacements for in-person visits. Instead, think of the virtual time together as a bridge that brings you and your children from one in-person visit to the next. Be sure to plan in-person visits when you can, but adding some virtual visits may also be beneficial.

Virtual visits should be discussed in the parenting plan. Consider including a guideline that enables these visits to provide unmonitored time between the parent and child. They should be treated as if the visit is in person.
